noun a German family of steel and armament manufacturers, based in Essen, a city in western Germany.
1. Friedrich, 1787–1826, considered to have founded the family business.
2. Alfred (`Cannon King'), 1812–87, son of Friedrich, inventor and metallurgist, famous for his siege guns used in Franco-Prussian war.
3. Friedrich Alfred, 1854–1902, son of Alfred; expanded business to include steel works, shipyards, and steamships.
4. Gustav Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach, 1870–1950, son-in-law of Friedrich Alfred; under his management the steel works provided the foundation for German rearmament during World War II; indicted as a war criminal at Nuremberg trials.
